What are the differences between a 3D foot scanner and a plantar pressure distribution system?

2025-09-19

A 3D foot scanner and a plantar pressure distribution system both measure plantar data, but there are big differences between the two.

Their differences are in the following aspects:
Plantar Pressure Distribution Testing System eMat460

  1. Different measurement principles.
The 3D foot scanner mainly uses optical principles such as laser to collect and measure the plantar surface of a person.
The plantar pressure distribution system mainly uses a pressure sensor array for sensing and measurement, such as commonly used capacitive sensors, resistive sensors, and piezoelectric sensors, reflecting mechanics.

  2. Different measurement contents.
The 3D foot scanner measures 3D data of the plantar, including foot length, foot width, arch height, as well as the contour and curvature of the plantar surface.
The plantar pressure distribution system mainly measures the pressure distribution of the plantar when a person is standing still or walking, such as the pressure magnitude borne by different plantar regions. In addition, it measures center of pressure trajectory, contact area, and changes in force.

  3. Different measurement modes.
The 3D foot scanner is mainly for static testing, and during the test, one needs to stand still.
The plantar pressure distribution system has multiple measurement modes, including static measurement, dynamic measurement, and balance measurement.

  4. Different data forms.
The 3D foot scanner focuses more on measuring 3D data.
The plantar pressure distribution system measures pressure data.

Simply put, the foot scanner tells you the shape and dimensional information of the plantar, while the plantar pressure distribution system tells you the magnitude of the force.

Although the 3D foot scanner and the plantar pressure distribution system are very different, the two can usually be used together.
For example, in making corrective insoles, the foot scanner measures the 3D model, and the plantar pressure distribution system analyzes the plantar pressure. This can make it easier for designers to better design support points, allowing the insole to better correct the health condition of the foot.

In practical applications, in high-end shoe stores, rehabilitation centers, sports laboratories, and other places, the two are often integrated and used together.

They are not in a relationship of opposition or contradiction, but rather in a relationship of complementarity.
