What Is 3D Foot Scanning? What Data Can Be Obtained from a Single Scan?

2026-10-15

3D plantar scanning is a non-contact measurement method that uses optical technologies such as lasers to collect 3D plantar data and generate 3D foot models under weight-bearing, semi-weight-bearing and other conditions.

Data acquisition for 3D plantar scanning takes only 5 to 10 seconds. It can capture hundreds of thousands of spatial coordinate points and fully record the specific X/Y/Z values of each coordinate. These values are processed by software to generate a 3D mesh model of the sole, and export 3D files in formats such as STL and OBJ. These 3D data files can be directly imported into CAD design software for personalized and corrective design of insoles and footwear, which can then be manufactured using 3D printers or insole carving machines.

Key dimensions captured by a 3D plantar scanner include foot length, metatarsal width (the widest part of the forefoot), heel width, medial arch length, hallux length, segmental dimensions of each toe, heel thickness, arch height (navicular height), metatarsal girth, heel girth, and other measurements.

Relevant parameters are automatically calculated by software based on these data to assess foot morphology.
For example, the arch index can be calculated to diagnose flat feet, high arches or normal foot arches.
Heel angle measurement helps identify heel varus and heel valgus.

The user stands on the designated scanning area of the device. Data collection of the sole takes approximately 5 to 10 seconds, generating 3D data in STL and other formats. A complete measurement report can be directly output on the computer software.

In the measurement report, users can clearly view key foot dimensions and foot health status, including hallux assessment, flat foot assessment, high arch assessment, heel valgus/varus assessment, as well as recommended shoe sizes and insoles.
The report also provides targeted advice on foot health maintenance.

3D plantar scanners are applied in orthopedics, rehabilitation and foot disorder screening, pediatric foot development screening, sports rehabilitation, custom orthotic insoles, high-end bespoke footwear customization, last research and development, and other fields.
