A 3D foot scanner is primarily used for precise digital measurement of human foot shapes and dimensions.
Traditional foot measurement and modeling methods mainly depend on manual operation and plaster casting. These outdated techniques usually produce obvious measurement errors and consume plenty of time, which is not suitable for large-scale standardized production.
The adoption of 3D foot scanners effectively solves these common pain points in the footwear customization industry.
The device can finish full-foot 3D reconstruction within 10 to 20 seconds, with measurement within 10 to 20 seconds, with measurement accuracy controlled within 0.5 millimeters. Upon completion of scanning, it can export standard 3D models in STL, OBJ and other common formats, as well as a detailed measurement report containing dozens of quantitative foot parameters.
The scanner can capture a full set of accurate foot data, including foot length, foot width, metatarsal girth (forefoot girth), instep girth, heel girth, ankle girth and arch height. It also identifies arch types (flat foot, normal foot, high arch foot), hallux vagus angle, heel inclination angle, and classifies toe shapes into Egyptian foot, Roman foot and Greek foot.
1.Custom Footwear Process with 3D Foot Scanners in Physical Stores
(1)Store staff guide customers to complete foot scanning. Customers simply stand on the scanner and follow the built-in voice instructions to finish the whole process effortlessly. The entire measurement only takes 10 to 20 seconds with zero complicated operations.
(2)The system will automatically generate an intuitive visual measurement report after scanning. Customers can check their specific foot dimensions and basic foot health conditions clearly. The report can be saved to mobile devices for free or printed on-site for personal retention.
(3)Based on customers’ actual foot data, the system will match and recommend suitable shoe, sandals, high heels and other common footwear categories.
(4)Customers can also customize orthopedic shoes and personalized footwear according to accurate scanning data. They can communicate with on-site staff to confirm customized details such as shoe style, fabric , color scheme and exclusive logo before placing an order. Store personnel will send the order information and complete foot scan data to the factory via cloud transmission for customized production.
2.Production of Personalized Shoe Lasts
Designers import the 3D foot data obtained from scanning into a professional shoe last design system, and set a reasonable fitting margin according to the shoe type. The system will make adaptive adjustments based on individual foot features, such as widening the forefoot for wide feet, raising the instep for high-instep feet, and optimizing the sole support structure for flat feet to fit different foot conditions.
The finalized design data can be imported into a CNC shoe last cutting machine to produce physical wooden or plastic shoe lasts. It can also be imported into 3D printing equipment to create tailored personalized shoe lasts through rapid prototyping.
3.Manufacturing Process of Custom Footwear
A shoe last serves as the core shaping frame for custom shoes, yet it is only the initial step of production. The complete manufacturing process includes material cutting, upper stitching, last fitting, heat setting, last removal, edge trimming, inner lining processing, quality inspection and final packaging. All these meticulous procedures are required to finish a qualified pair of custom shoes.
